Revealing The Cattle Cottage Main Level

Updated: Mar 28

Back in 2023, our own Store Manager - Kenadey and her husband began remodeling his grandparent’s farmhouse into a home for their growing family of five. While Phase One of the project was in construction, the work for Phase Two was already in design.

Along with remodeling the entire home, they decided to add on 2,500 additional square feet and remodel the remainder of the home. In this blog post, we’ll be revealing the main level of the addition, which includes the primary suite, girls bedroom, morning room, guest bath, living room, and laundry room. Our next blog post will feature the upper level of The Cattle Cottage that we can’t wait to share with you!

The Cattle Cottage was not about creating a house; the vision was to create a home through personal design, intentional details, and thoughtful choices. The homeowners wanted a space their family could continue to grow into and a home to welcome family and friends, and that’s exactly what this space is.

The Design

Instead of selecting more traditional design elements, Kenadey chose to push the envelope and make every single square foot of their home personal. The vision was to create a space that boldly represents their family. Every room is unique and creates a moment as you walk through the home.

One of the more notable features is the amount of tile throughout the bathrooms and laundry room. Kenadey selected a variety of bold, yet cohesive tile patterns that further showcase her design style. Additionally, the paint colors in each room are distinct and help to tell the story of their family.

The Construction

Although working with an older home can bring challenges, it’s always special to uncover the character and history of the original home through the remodel process. Throughout this home, the goal was to seamlessly combine the new elements with the existing home.

During construction, entire cabinets needed to be taken apart in order to fit into the narrow hallways of the original home. Also, during construction, the foundation was initially poured wrong, which impacted the timeline of the project, but it was crucial to have every detail done correctly.

The Living Room

The Cattle Cottage features several custom installations, including a large stone fireplace from Aspen Stone from Centurion Stone of Iowa in the living room that ties beautifully into the stone walls in the primary suite. To furnish the space, Kenadey selected pieces from Rowe Furniture and a large rug from Loloi Rugs. The vision for creating a home, not just a house translated into a large living room for the entire family to gather.

The artwork in the living room was sourced from the Studio McGee line at Target.

The grand staircase provides a beautiful transition to the upper level, complete with wood detailing.

The Primary Suite

One of the standout spaces of the home is the primary suite, which was designed to feel spa-like and spacious. Dark wood beams on the ceiling emphasize the 15’ ceiling vault.

For the bed frame, Kenadey chose a stunning piece from Rowe Furniture, complemented by nightstands from Anthropologie Home & Furniture. The Loloi rug grounds the space and ties the colors together beautifully.

Primary Bathroom

In the primary bathroom, Kenadey selected inset cabinetry for the vanities to add even more character to the space and a stone wall feature from Centurion Stone of Iowa behind the vanities and tub. As a compliment to the cabinetry, hardware from Top Knobs brings the space together.

The faucets for the sinks and bathtub were sourced from Vintage Bath.

The large bathtub from Vintage Bath is a standout feature in the space, and the Andersen windows give a nod to the original character of the home, while providing natural light.

The shower features a beautiful variety of tile from TileBar, complete with a ledge for additional storage. The double shower heads from Vintage Bath add to the spa-like feel. Glass doors will eventually be added to the shower, but oftentimes part of the remodel or build process is dealing with long wait times of specific products and materials.

Primary Closet

Spacious built-in closets provide ample storage in the walk-in primary closet, and the window lets in beautiful natural light. The bench from Rowe Furniture brings both functionality and a rich pattern to the space. A large Anthropologie Home & Furniture mirror is a striking feature to the primary suite.

The Morning Room

While traveling, Kenadey discovered the concept of a “morning room,” which functions as a space to capture early sunlight while enjoying morning activities, such as drinking coffee, reading, and gathering together. With a built-in beverage fridge from Cafe Appliances, this room allows the homeowners to stay near the primary suite while beginning their day.

The large checkered floor tile from Edward Martin creates a bold statement in the sitting room of the primary suite. Additionally, a wood wall feature adds lots of warmth to the room and gives a nod to the original features of the home.

Above the backsplash, Kenadey selected artwork from Lulu and Georgia that brings an antique charm. Additionally, she sourced the hardware for the built-ins from Rejuvenation. A beautiful Kohler faucet completes the coffee bar.

Girls Room

Next to the primary suite is a color-drenched bedroom for Kenadey’s daughter that speaks to her unique personality. The vision was to find bold colors, paired with intentional details and patterns to make each child feel at home in their own space.

In this bedroom, she selected Patchwork Plum by Sherwin Williams to create a moody, yet feminine feel. The Anthropologie Home & Furniture light fixture adds interest to the space.

The color-drenched built-ins feature Top Knobs hardware.

Bathroom

In the bathroom, Kenadey leaned into bold patterned countertops, paired with rich colored cabinetry. She especially loves the combination with the tile and hardware. Above the sinks, Kenadey brought in two Pottery Barn mirrors to complement the hardware.

The Laundry Room

With a growing family, Kenadey thought through the functionality of every room, including the laundry room. With two GE washing machines and dryers, the space accommodates their family well now and in the future.

She continued the Edward Martin checkered floor tile in the laundry room, complemented by taupe cabinetry.

The Cattle Cottage is complete and perfectly designed for Kenadey and her family to enjoy for years to come. She loved designing her home and implementing personal details throughout every single square foot.
