Revealing the Historic Home Revival

Our team recently wrapped up the Historic Home Revival - a kitchen and pantry renovation in Steamboat Rock, Iowa.
The goal of our Interior Designer Natalie was to create a newly updated kitchen that still fit the age of the home. Her vision was to pay respect to the home’s original character while designing a space that looked like it was always meant to be there.
Natalie will never forget this experience of partnering closely with the clients to create a beautiful, functional kitchen to gather in and love for years to come.
Before
Prior to the renovation, the space felt outdated, with a layout that didn’t function well. While there was ample square footage, the floorplan didn’t have a natural flow or meet our client’s needs well.
The Design
Designs began by bringing the selections together on a concept board. We kept the existing paint in the space but brought in all new materials, including tile, countertops, and cabinetry.
Next, we moved to designing an updated floor plan to take better advantage of the space and create a more functional layout.
Lastly, 3D renderings allowed our clients to see how the material selections would visually look in their updated space.
The Kitchen
We partnered with Showplace Cabinetry for the beautiful wood cabinetry, stained Cashew on Quarter Sawn Oak wood. This combination provides the right amount of warmth and character to the cabinetry.
One of Natalie’s favorite elements of the space is the stacked upper cabinets. We used the wall height to our advantage for this feature, providing additional storage for the clients. The top section has glass fronts as a way to display dishes or decor.
We selected bronze hardware from Amerock Hardware for the knobs and pulls. Natalie selected a brushed nickel faucet from Vintage Bath & Tub, further leaning into the character of the original home.
For the backsplash, we chose a 5x5 moss green tile from Edward Martin to tie into the home’s original architecture, while adding a subtle pop of color to the space. This selection is a unique, unexpected touch to the kitchen that we love.
The floor tile is a hex matte porcelain tile from Tile Bar that adds a subtle pattern to the space.
The Pantry
A walk-in pantry right off the kitchen adds space for storage near the kitchen, complete with built-in shelving. This allows the main kitchen area to be reserved for prep, while keeping supplies hidden away from sight.
We selected Sherwin Williams Heron Plume for the wall color, complemented by Showplace Cabinetry.
The Island
On the island, Natalie designed an end cap book shelf that can be used to showcase seasonal decor. She saw the idea in the Showplace Cabinets catalog and knew it would be the perfect addition to this kitchen. The island features additional cabinetry and functional seating.
Above the island is a beautiful light fixture from Innovations Lighting that makes a statement in the space. Surrounding the island are counter stools from 319 Decor & Design.
The Challenges
Historic homes always come with some challenges, especially during construction. When altering walls, we weren’t sure what we would find hidden within the structure of the home.
We needed to alter the crown molding, but the ceiling height in older homes can vary slightly depending on the exact spot of the room. We brainstormed with the experienced contractor and carpenters to find ways we could use the material we already have. In the end, the finished product turned out beautifully!
